Why HITs happen
The NBI checks your name against its records. If someone with the same or a similar name has a record, the system flags your application as a HIT. People with common first names and surnames get HITs more often, even with a spotless record.
What happens next
Finish your biometrics as normal
Your photo, fingerprints and signature are still captured.
Get your return date
Branch staff tell you when to come back, usually after 5 to 10 working days.
Your record is reviewed by hand
This is when the NBI confirms the matching record isn't you.
Return on the date given
There's no additional fee for the return visit.
Nobody can remove a HIT for money. People who offer to "clear" or "fast-track" a HIT for a fee are scammers. Wait for the official review.

How to plan around a HIT
- Apply early. If your job offer or visa has a deadline, apply at least two weeks before it.
- Tell your employer. Many employers are used to HIT delays and will accept proof that your clearance is being processed.
- Get the police clearance too. If the employer accepts either, a police clearance may be faster.
