Which one do you need?
- "Police clearance" for a job or permit today almost always means the National Police Clearance. Apply at pnpclearance.ph: see the full guide.
- You don't need a local police clearance first. The PNP's own guide says a local police clearance is not a pre-requisite for the National Police Clearance.
- A barangay clearance is a separate document from your barangay. It's often needed for business permits and proof of residence, and your barangay also issues the first-time job seeker certification used for the free NBI and police clearances.
When unsure, ask the office for the exact name of the document. "Police clearance", "NBI clearance" and "barangay clearance" are three different papers from three different offices.
How the National Police Clearance changed things
The National Police Clearance System lets you apply online and use one clearance nationwide, instead of getting a different local clearance from each city. That's why most offices now ask for the NPC.
